FISHING TIPS FOR CANADA
Walleye
Walleye thrive in a range of lake conditions in Canada. Finlayson Resort walleye fishing is excellent! Walleye's preferred cover includes weed, wood and rock. The fish in canada like lake bottoms ranging from soft mud to flooded timber, rubble or bedrock.
The walleye is a light-avoiding fish, and fishing is generally best on cloudy, overcast days.
Casting with spinners or minnow-imitating plugs is a good bet. Jigs, either traditional bucktails, or worms (minnows) are walleye fishing favorites.
Canada's Northern Pike
Northern Pike are widely distributed in Canada, and are readily caught at our Canada resort. Northern pike prefer weedy bays during spring and summer. In Canada's cooler months these fish will seek deeper water. Pike are aggressive feeders, and will eat anything.
Canada's Lake Trout
Lake trout normally inhabit lakes greater than 15 meters (50 feet). In spring, the fish are found near the surface. As the water warms up they go deeper. Large spoons, spinners are good summer trolling baits. Jigging, or still-fishing with dead minnows are effective in summer. Ice fishing in Ontario Canada is done with minnows, lake herring.
Middle of Summer Lake Trout:
Summer is when people spend the least amount of time fishing Lake Trout. With the 3-way swivel method, summer can be the best time because these fish are concentrated in deep holes. Once you find a fishing hole where you are catching Canada's Lake Trout, keep fishing it because they will stay in the same spot all summer. Perseverance is a major factor in successful Lake Trout fishing in Canada.
Yellow Perch
Yellow Perch are widely distributed throughout Northern Ontario Canada. Perch are numerous in large expanses of open water and moderate amounts of vegetation. They often school, and share water with walleye and bass. Perch show a preference for their natural food. The live minnow gives the best success all year long.
CANADIAN SMALL MOUTH BASS
Canada's Small mouth Bass are found in clear, warm, rocky lakes. Bass concentrate around shoreline, rocks and points, often in deep water.
Small mouth fishing at Finlayson Resort is excellent! Resort fishing in late May-June is good, as the fish are in their pre-spawn and spawn patterns and are caught shallow. The male bass are shallow, defending the fish beds against threats. Leeches, crawlers, and minnows work excellent. Late June the spawn is over and the fish transition into summer patterns.
June brings warmer weather and sunlight to our resort waters, which means vegetation becomes visible. Once the weed lines establish, schooling bait fish seek cover. The bait fish are followed by feeding, small mouth bass. Action by the weed lines is fast and furious. Prime locater lures include twitch minnow baits, spinners, and safety pin style spinner baits. If the fish are active on these faster moving lures, keep throwing them. If action slows down, try using bass jigs and plastic twitch/glider baits. If the fish are not located in the vegetation, move out to deeper weed line edges, or go to some rock shelves. These fish move in and out of the weeds all day long. Crank baits can be an excellent selection, especially along these deeper edges.
Small mouth bass fishing in Ontario Canada is some of the most exciting action to be had. It's hard to beat the challenge a nice, small mouth as it twirls and dances on its way into your fishing boat.
